Summary: This position involves skilled professional and technical work in the routine daily care of animals, enclosures, and related facilities at the Zoo's Animal Ambassador Collection. Responsibilities include husbandry duties, interpretive programming such as leading on-ground animal presentations, and participating in marketing events. The role requires positive interaction and storytelling with visitors, working closely with Education staff and animal handlers in a fast-paced environment. The position reports to the Curator of Ambassador Animals and the Zoological Manager of Ambassador Animals. Experience Requirements Minimum of two years of training experience preferred. Experience working with multiple ambassador animal taxa in free contact is desired. Knowledge of animal husbandry, operant and classical conditioning, and handling techniques for reptiles, amphibians, arthropods, small mammals, and birds. Experience presenting animals publicly, with proficiency in public speaking and guest engagement. Essential Functions Responsibilities include daily husbandry, supporting reproduction, research, enrichment, training, and conservation efforts, monitoring animal health and behavior, record keeping, behavior modification, and enrichment programs. The role involves teamwork, developing visitor engagement programs, maintaining professionalism, identifying maintenance issues, preparing diets, instructing new staff, assisting veterinary staff, and other duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate's degree preferred; equivalent experience considered. Knowledge of natural history, biology, husbandry, and conservation is required. Strong commitment to animal welfare and public engagement. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and judgment skills. Ability to build positive relationships with staff and the public. Comfort with guest interactions and public presentations. Self-motivated, professional, proficient with Microsoft Office, reliable, team and individual worker. Understanding and embodying the Zoo's core values and mission. Working Conditions Requires a valid driver’s license, ability to stand, walk, lift up to 40 pounds, and work outdoors. Exposure to animals and zoonotic diseases is possible. Position Details & Benefits Full-time position with benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(k), PTO, insurance, discounts, and passes. Work schedule typically involves four 10-hour days, with off-days between Monday-Thursday. Starting pay ranges from $21.73 to $25.75 based on experience.
