Job Title: Ammonia Refrigeration Technician

Location: San Francisco, CA

Job Type: Full-Time

Job Summary

We seek a skilled and safety-conscious Ammonia Refrigeration Technician to join our San Francisco, CA operations team. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with ammonia (NH3) refrigeration systems and a strong commitment to regulatory compliance, preventative maintenance, and system optimization. This is an excellent opportunity for professionals with RETA or CIRO certifications who want to grow in a dynamic, team-oriented environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair industrial ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • Monitor system performance and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA and EPA guidelines.
  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on refrigeration, HVAC, and related utility systems.
  • Support system start-ups, installations, and commissioning of new equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of all repairs, inspections, maintenance, and refrigerant use per PSM/RMP protocols.
  • Respond to emergencies and conduct root cause analyses on failures.
  • Assist in training and mentoring junior technicians to build internal expertise.
  • Coordinate with facility management and contractors during service and construction projects.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience with ammonia refrigeration systems.
  • RETA, CIRO, CARO, or equivalent certification is highly preferred.
  • Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Familiarity with PLC-based control systems is a plus.
  • Experience working in food processing, cold storage, or manufacturing facilities.
  • Solid understanding of PSM (Process Safety Management) and RMP (Risk Management Plan) protocols.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills; ability to work independently when required.
  • Must be able to participate in an on-call rotation and respond to off-hour emergencies.
